Background and Objectives: There are several indices introduced for determining the relationship between obesity with risk of chronic diseases. Although body mass index (BMI) is the commonest index for screening obesity because of some limitations, other indices such as waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are used regardless of their limitations. As the latter indexes have some limitations in obesity screening, this study was aimed examine the relationship between blood pressure and waist to stature ratio (WSR) compared with BMI, WC and WHR. Materials and Methods: In this study, 580 and 460 adult women and men were studied, respectively. Stature, weight, waist and hip circumferences, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured using standard methods. Total measurements were done three times and the average of them was used for analysis. Data analysis was done using SPSS (ver.13.0). Results: Mean of BMI and waist circumference were in men 27.48±3.84 Kg/m2 and 96.27±10.41 cm and in women27.12±4.96 Kg/m2 and 84.75±12.35 cm, respectively. Strongest significant correlation was found between systolic blood pressure and WSR in both women and men (r= 0.19 and r= 0.23, respectively) while the poor correlation related to WHR (r =0.09 and r =0.16, respectively) .Diastolic blood pressure showed the strongest correlation with BMI and then WSR. In men and women, diastolic blood pressure had the strongest correlation with BMI primarily and then WHR while WHR showed the strongest association with systolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Results of this study revealed high relationship between WSR and systolic blood pressure in hypertension screening and because of less limitation compared with BMI, this index could be applicable widely in obesity-related chronic diseases.
