An Analysis of Alawi Uprisings during Imam Ridhaʹs Life-Time and Their Relation To His Appointment as Crown Prince

Imam Ridhaʹs imamate (183-203 H.) was of paramount importance, not only culturally and doctrinally, but also politically. In the final years of his imamate, the Alawis began several uprisings, involving many Alawi clans, and leading to the conquest of Kufa, Basra, Mecca, Medina and Yemen. Such developments pushed Maʹmoon to request Imam Ridha to become his crown prince, in order to pacify the Shiʹa. In this article, the link between these uprisings and the appointment of the Imam as crown prince is explored.
