The Twelver Shiʹa and Hanbali schools were the two dominant schools of thought in the city of Baghdad, under the Buwayhids (the fourth and fifth centuries A.H.). They exchanged views in various areas, including political thought, and particularly on issues such as collaborating with an illegitimate ruler, opposing a muslim ruler, taqiyya and jihad, It should be mentioned, however, that there were more divergence between the views of the two schools than convergence. The Hanbalis finally dominated the intellectual life of the city, due to factors such as paying more attention to the holy book and sunna. They had the Caliphate institution, narrators of hadith, and the majority of the population, under the banner of Arabism, on their side, accusing their opponents of extremism (particularly extreme rationalism) and of borrowing from non-Islamic strands of thoght. The divergence between the two denominations intensified sectarianism, weakened the Buwayhids and led to the domination the Ashʹarites.
