Numerical Simulation of Flow in Stilling Basin (Case Study of Talvar Dam)

Analysis of the flow over the dam spillway and in the stilling basin using physical models is time consuming and costly. Fast development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in recent years, promotes the wider use of the numerical models for such applications. The numerical simulation of the flow-field in stilling basins using F10W-3D is presented in this paper. The k- s turbulence model is used and the VOF method is applied to calculate the free surface. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data of a physical model (1:45 scale model of the Talvar dam in the Zanjan province) and good agreement was found. Also comparison of the simulated results with the USBR data showed fair agreement.
