Molecular imprinting offers a simple and general approach for the preparation of robust materials with applications in molecular recognition. Molecular imprinting technique allows the formation of specific recognition sites in macromolecilles. In this process, functional and crosslinking monomers are copolymerized in the presence of a target analyte (template). The functional monomers form a complex with the imprint molecule and in the subsequent polymerization, the functional groups are held in position by the highly cross-linked structure. After the removal of the print molecule, recognition sites suitable for the selective rebinding of the print molecule are obtained. Due to their unique properties, molecularly imprinted polymers have been developed for several areas including environmental, industrial and military applications. A major concern in the development of MlP-based sensors is signal transduction for various molecules such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, sugars, amino acids, toxins, chemical warfare agents and explosives. This review focuses on recent advances and developments using molecularly imprinted polymers for detection of explosives.
