Information Visualization and its Application in Library and Information Science

Since the 1980ʹs that computers became affordable and powerful enough to support interactive graphics, using image as a new context for explaining concepts and ideas considered once more. Henceforth, images became the subject of many researchers in different fields and gradually formed independent areas of research. One of these areas which have some similarities with Library and Information Science at least in content is "information visualization". This article tends to explain the concept of information visualization and some of its application in Library and Information Science. For this purpose, first we review the definitions of the words "information" and "visualization", then we present a short history of information visualization and the main factors which left some impressions on it, Thereafter we provide some definitions of information visualization to distinguish it from other related concepts, and finally we mention some of its application in Library and Information Science.
