Evaluation of Knowledge about Narcotic Drugs among Students of Islamic Azad Universities, zone 4

This research examines the knowledge and attitudes that the students of Islamic Azad Universities zone 4, hold about narcotic drugs and substance abuse. This is a descriptive and periodical study done in 1386 (2007). A total of 3449 (52.7% male and 47.3% female) students from eighteen Azad universities were randomly selected to complete the questionnaire which was made by the researcher and was composed of 60 multiple-choice questions. The data analysis was done by T-test and ANOVA. The results revealed that 69.6% of the students were familiar with at least one narcotic drug. Escaping of grief, nervous tension family problems and having addicted friends were mentioned as major factors of substance abuse by many of the students. 91.3% of males and 88.1% of females knew that using drugs leisurely is addictive. Many students (82.2% males, 81.4% females) stated that encouraging sport activities in university can be one of the most significant programs for preventing addiction. 78.3% of males and 84.1% of females were familiar with the proper therapeutic programs of addiction. Generally, studentsʹ knowledge about factors of substance abuse (79.1%), prevention programs (89.6%) and symptoms of narcotic drug abuse (75.6%) was more than average. The results of T-test showed that there is a significant difference in addiction, factors of substance abuse, prevention programs and therapeutic programs between male and female studentsʹ viewpoint. The results of ANOVA showed that there is not a significant difference in factors of substance abuse and prevention programs between studentsʹ viewpoint with different levels of education.
