Mobile geoservices are essential tools in contemporary life. In such services, maps, which known as mobile maps, are the most important medium to represent information to users. Design and development of such maps are challenging works due to the movement of users and dynamic environment. Userʹs context (such as position, velocity, time and so on) changes time to time. In order to increase the usability of the mobile geoservices, the context and its changes must be considered in presenting maps to users. In other words, mobile geoservices have to take into account these parameters and their variable nature and adapt its maps to different context. Appropriate maps should be delivered to users, at a suitable scale and with specific visualization parameters based on the current context. In mobile environment, the dynamic usage environment does not allow extensive interaction between users and services. Thus, direct interaction of users must be kept at minimum. As a result, services must be able to acquire and interpret context information and its variation in time automatically and adapt its maps intelligently. An effective approach to achieve this aim is to integrate context aware computing with mobile geoservices. Context aware computing is a computing that enables systems to acquire current userʹs context and adapt behavior accordingly. In this paper, adaptation of maps in different context is investigated. With regards to car navigation system, as a case study, two fundamental questions of this research were what kinds of information were required in any context and how the selected information must be visualized at different situations to provide maximum usability. Maps have several elements (scale, orientation, elements, their symbology and so on) that can be adapted according to current context. In this paper, map elements which can be adapted based on changing context, determined and modeled using UML notation. Then, all contexts and their impacts on map elements were evaluated and methods for adapting each of the map elements were proposed. In addition, a comprehensive model for producing adaptive maps based on the change of model, a prototype context aware car context was developed.
