The Relationship between Parentsʹ Child Rearing Practice and Young Adultsʹ Mental Health in Islamshahr

The purpose of the present research was to study the relationship between parentsʹ child rearing practices and youngstersʹ mental health in Islamshahr. The population of research was comprised of all high school students in Islamshahr. 300 (150 girls and 150 boys) were selected through cluster random sampling. 12 hypotheses were formulated about the relationship between parentsʹ child rearing practices (democratic, autocratic, and neglectful) and youngstersʹ mental health (physical symptoms, anxiety and sleeplessness, and disorder in social functions and depression) together with 4 items related to predictivity value of child rearing practices in youngstersʹ mental health. Baumrindʹs Child Rearing Practices Test and GHQ-28 test were administered. To analyze the data, Pearson correlation of coefficient and regression analysis were used. The findings indicated that there is a negative correlation between democratic child rearing practice and different aspects of mental health (physical symptoms, anxiety and sleeplessness, and disorder in social functions and depression).
