Study on relation between heart rate and serum bilirubin level in icteric patients

Background: Jaundice is an almost common finding in the medical practice with a broad range of variety of the underlying causes. The shared aspect of many these conditions is an increased level of serum bilirubin. One of the accompanying signs in patients with hepatitis has been reported the presence of bradycardia. This study aimed at evaluating the relation between heart rate and serum bilirubin Jevel in icteric patients. Materials and Methods: In an analytic-descriptive setting, 129 icteric cases were recruited during an 18-month period. Heart rate and serum level of bilirubin was measured in all patients. The patients were categorized into subgroups according their age; under 40 years (and older 12), older than 40 years and the neonates (as a reference group). The correlation between the heart rate and the serum level of bilirubin was investigated. Results: There was a negative correlation between the serum level of total bilirubin and the heart rate in adult and neonate groups; however not in patients 40 year-old or older. The serum level of total bilirubin was not significantly different between the patients with and without bradycardia. Conclusion: According to our results, emergence of bradycardia should always be considered in patients with jaundice; elderly and the complicated cases in particular. For a better and more exact cut-off value of the serum level of bilirubin, further studies with larger sample sizes are recommended to be carried out.
