The Predicting Sources of Group Cohesion from Emotional Intelligence View in Football Players

Group cohesion is an important factor in team succeed The main aim of this study was the predict team cohesion from emotional intelligence view in football players. The subjects were included 95 athletics football players (ages 18- 32) that had been selected by cluster sampling method from II division football teams of Tehran. Data were collecting by using Sheering EI standardized questionnaire and Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ). Data were analyzed, using Pearsonʹs correlation coefficient and statistical regression tests at the significant level of p<0.05. The findings of the study showed that there was significant relationship between EI and team cohesion (r=0.56, p<0.01). Also, emotional intelligence significantly predicted group cohesion (Adjusted r2=0.53), with self- awareness and communication skills being the best predictors. Regarding the EI and team cohesion, it seems that paying attention to EI is very effective and valuable in improving mental health and eventually improving performance of competitive athletes such as football. This article suggests that because of the importance of team cohesion in its performance, EI factors must be considered to.
