Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP): A Conceptual Model for Appropriate Approach Selection Based on Burell & Morganʹs Model

Today organizations try to develops their products and services through collecting information from their external environment, because information is a key resource. One of the basic steps in organizational strategy formulation is identifying strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. Strategic information systems gather this information. A lot of studies have been done about SISP and the most common is Burell & Morganʹs study. At the first this model was presented to classify social systems theories and then to classify SISP approaches, because of that, it does not provide a methodology to select an appropriate approach to SISP. To solve this problem, first this article develop a model to identify two dimensions: internal/external factors and organic/mechanic systems. Then a combined model is provided. We identify a list of important internal and external information and classify them on four categories based on our model. We investigate the role of organizational structure in selecting an appropriate SISP approach. Finally, a three step methodology is provided based on Burell & Morganʹs model as a result of this study.
