Aba-Weaving in Behbahan

Aba is one of the simplest Iranian clothes, which is woven without any particular design or ornaments. Although its production follows almost an identical method and style in various regions of Iran, certain weaving techniques in different parts of Iran may have considerable differences depending on the application and type of use. One of the regions in which Aba was being produced since long but has been forgotten at present is the city of Behbahan on the northeast of Khouzestan Province with about 11 semi-active workshops. Aba of Behbahan is produced in two types of Heleh and Cheghe-made from hand-woven woolen yarn dyed in oak tree and sized by date juice. The workshop of Aba-weaving is located in an outdoor space. This research is an explanatory-field study which attempts to analyze various parts of Behbahan weaving machine and describe the stages of weaving, while classifying and introducing local expressions used for Aba-weaving in this region.
