In this research, the reaction of different woods to various coatings has been studied while the physical properties of common woods as well as necessary visual principles for creating an artistic Moʹaragh work have been analyzed. The aim of this research is to introduce a detailed and scientific understanding of common woods features in the art of Moʹaragh. Moreover, the characteristics and influence of various types of varnish coatings, probably resulting in significant changes on the final visual aspects and general composition of the work on these woods are examined. According to the information obtained via library and experimental studies, in order to create a work of art in each Moʹaragh craft, the Moʹaragh craftsman first needs to have visual understanding as well as technical knowledge on various woods and materials properties so that the selection of wood could be made according to the external and technical features, such as coloring, stability, soundness, dryness, capability of sawing and grinding and its applicability. The results of experimental tests show that despite the similarity in the influence of different coating materials on all types of woods in terms of color, the reaction of woods may not be the same. Consequently, the knowledge of final color changes along with the texture and design of wood under the varnishes providing the final composition, together with other technical and artistic aspects, including basic design, principles of separation, cutting of pieces, replacement, elaborate work, etc... are all skills required in creating a work of Moʹaragh art
