Introduction and Objectives: Salmonella is one of the most prevalent bacteria, transmitted from animals to food and humans. It has been one of the most important problems for medical society. In recent years resistance to fluoroquinolone has resulted in clinical failure of treatment. Current study conducted to evaluate antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella spp. isolated from acute diarrhea in Tehran.
Materials and methods: Stool samples from patients with acute diarrhea were collected and subjected to study. Isolation and identification of Salmonella spp. were done by biochemical standard methods. Serotyping was done by specific antisera. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the isolates was carried out according to CLSI protocols.
Results: During the period of study 127 Salmonella spp. were isolated from patients with acute diarrhea in Tehranʹs hospitals. Among 127 isolates, 18 (14.2%) Salmonella typhi, 10 (7.9%) S. paratyphiA, 43 (33.9%) S. paratyphiC, 27 (21.3%) S. entritidis, 7 (5.5%) S. infantis and 22 (17.3%) S. paratyphiB were identified. In addition, 45.7% of all Salmonella spp. isolated from acute diarrhea were resistant to nalidixic acid and none was resistant to ciprofloxacin.
Conclusion: The increase of quinolone-resistant isolates of Salmonellae from humans is a potential public health risk and may compromise effective antibiotic therapy. The high rate of nalidixic acid resistance among Salmonella spp. isolates found in this study is alarming. As a result, in order to reduce antimicrobial resistance, periodically use of antibiotics, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and ongoing assessment of resistance in Salmonella spp. to commonly used antimicrobials is strongly recommended.
