Response to Hepatitis B Vaccination among Health Care Workers

Background and Objectives: Hepatitis B is more prevalent in the developing world. Annually 600000-700000 needle stick occurs in US hospitals and nurses are the most at risk group. The health care workers are at risk of infection with blood borne pathogens through occupational exposure to blood and infectious body fluids, therefore vaccination against hepatitis B is recommended in high risk group like health care workers. This study was designed in order to evaluation of HBsAb level in Kurdistan HCWs. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional descriptive-analytic study with random stratified sampling implemented on 489 person of Kurdistan province hospitals health care workers. Data collected with questionnaire and serologic test done on 3 cc blood sample for HBsAb level in serum. Statistical analysis was performed with X2 test and T test. Results: Of the 489 persons was studied, 53.9% was female and 46.1% was male. According to The most of samples are in 30-39 ages ranged. 18.5% are singles and 81.5%) are marriage. 97.3% of samples had history of hepatitis B vaccination and vaccination in 19.6% was completed. 36.8%) has history of needle stick. In overall 2.6% of study population were without immunization, 10.4%) were without protective immunization and 25.7% had low immunization against hepatitis B. there was no statistical differences between anti body titers and smoking, gender, age group and lost dose vaccine administration time. Conclusions: The results indicate that Kurdistan health care workers have moderate immunization against hepatitis B and in some of them administration of booster dose is needed.
