Safety Assessment of Cry Proteins Using Allergenic Databases Rashidi

I Abstract nsect resistant Bt plants are being grown for food and feed. Farmers1 acceptance of these plants is high because of their specificity and long lasting resistance of these plants. Numerous studies have shown the safety of Cry proteins for human. One of the safety concerns of newly expressed proteins in transgenic food crops is their allergenicity. One of the steps in studying the allergenicity of these proteins is sequence alignment of these proteins against the known allergens in databases, based on the principles proposed by Codx alimentarius (FAO-WHO). In this study 81 Cry proteins were assessed using three databases of allergen proteins: Allergenonline, Allermatch and SDAP using three methods: 1) full alignment of Cry proteins against the known allergens, 2) 80 amino acids window match with more than 35% similarity and 3) 6 continues identical amino acids. In the second method which is the only method accepted by Codex alimentarius and the international community no allergen was found to match any of the Cry proteins. We conclude that non of the Cry proteins could be considered allergenic according to this finding. However, using the two other methods large numbers of allergenic protein were found. This indicates the two un approved methods (1 and 3) are not appropriate for this type of studies
