Application of Nanobiosensore in Detection of Transgenic Plant Materials

I n recent years, production of transgenic plants and their increased cultivation area in the world scale, have significantly contributed to food and feed prodcution. Due to the concerns raised in different countries about the safety aspects of transgenic crop plants, national and international organizations are working towards the development of rules and regulations that will ensure the safe deployment and use of this modern technology. In some countries labeling of the foods derived from genetically modified organisms are compulsory. Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety requires the Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) to be labeled when they are subject to transboundary movement. Polymerase chain reaction based methods used for the detection of LMOs are expensive and time consuming. Recently, progress made in nano-biotechnology has been opened novel fields. Biosensors that act based on interactions between biological molecules have been developed. Using these methods rapid identification and quantification of LMOs were made possible. In this paper the advancs in application of biosensors for LMO detection is reviewd.
