Genetically modified organisms: public acceptance in Yasuj and Dehdasht Provinces

Public acceptance of biotechnology and its products, especially genetically modified organisms (GMO), is the most important factor for the developing of this new technology. In order to evaluate the attitude of Yasuj and Dehdasht Provinces residents toward GMO, this research was conducted in the year 1387. A questionnaire containing personal information and 39 questions was prepared and distributed among the participants. The resulting data was analyzed by the SPSS software. The general result shows that Yasuj and Dehdasht residentsʹ knowledge regarding to GMO is limited. Among 174 participants only 11% had remarkable information about GM products. Only 2% of the participants had information about the purpose of the GMO production. The information of participants having 18-25 years old was more than the others. Participants who educated in agriculture, biology, medical science, basic science and similar field had the highest level of information. About 55% of the participants had university degree. There was no significant relation between participants1 education and their information on GMOs.
