Isolation, identification and in vitro antibiotic sensitivity of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale from Babol commercial broiler flocks

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is a new-emerging bacterium. This bacterium has been isolated from turkey and chickens with respiratory signs, growth reduction and increasing in mortality. The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify ORT from Babol commercial flocks, and drug sensivity of the isolates. After examination of carcasses in clinic, tracheal swab samples collected from suspected cases with symptoms of ornithobacteriosis. Then the swabs transferred to the BHI medium and in the laboratory, linear culture on 5% sheep blood agar containing gentamycin was carried out. ORT was isolated and identified from a 42 days old broiler flock out of 38 flocks. Antibiogram test showed that the isolate was resistant to nalidixic Acid, streptomycin, sultrim, Gentamycin, tetracycline, colistin, flumequine and furazolidone. This study for the first time proved presence of ORT in chicken flocks around Babol. Antibiogramʹs result showed acquired resistance of ORT against some current antibiotics.
