Capabilities and restrictions of MARC

The present research aims to evaluate the status of MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloguing) in Iran and to identify its capabilities and restrictions. The methods of this research are library research and also interviewing with a number of experts in the fields of computer and library and information science. The most important capabilities of MARC are: a standard for bibliographic information interchange and storage, having the possibilities for the exchange of bibliographic information in dif- ^ ferent languages and the creation of a union catalogue. Problems experienced with MARC in Iran are the unfamiliarity of librarians and teachers of library science with MARC, the incompatibility of library softwares with MARC and inconsistency inusing any kind of MARC.
