In order to determine the effect of decreased moisture content (MC) on germination attributes of Caucasian oak (Quercus castaneifolia C.A.Meyer.) acorn, samples with MC 42% were collected from some mature trees in the Forest Park of Noor (northern Iran), in late December 2006. The intact and homogenous acorns were placed in incubator (30°C) for 1, 2, 4 and 8 days whereas their MC reached 36, 23, 14 and 9%, respectively. Then the acorns were placed in plastic plates containing sterilized sand treated in laboratory (22-25°C) for four weeks. The results revealed that germination rate decreased with reduced MC (p < 0.05). The highest germination percent (95.3 and 87.3%) occurred in MC 42% and 36%, respectively. In MC 23%, germination percent was very poor (8%) and in MC lower than 14% no germination came out. With decreasing MC, other germination attributes including, germination capacity, germination energy, mean daily germination, maximum mean daily germination, germination speed, germination value and seedling vigor index reduced. It was also revealed that with decreasing MC most of the germinations attributes in Q. castaneifolia acorns significantly damaged and in MC <14% germination stopped completely. This storage behavior, originating from rapid decreased of MC in Q. castaneifolia acorn and confirming its recalcitrant behavior, indicates this reality that, acorns must be sown before decreasing initial MC. Or that till the first planting season, the
acorns must be preserved in cool and moist stores of mountainous forests and or in cool environments (e.g., refrigerator), so that the germination capacity can be highly kept.
