Comparison the effects of lamotrigine and gabapentine on dysesthetic pains among diabetic polyneuropathy patients

Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of neuropathy around the world and polyneuropathy is the most usual presentation of it. Although motoric defi¬cits lead to morbidity in these patients but dysesthetic pains is the most com¬plaint.Although a lot of research have be done to evaluate the effects of different drugs on paresthetic diabetic pains, there showed various controversy.we de¬cided to compare the effects of these drugs with each other.36 diabetic patients with definitive sensory motoric polyneuropathy which con-firmed with NCV and EMG and complained from pain and paresthesia enrolled in this study, we divided them into three groups(14 in gabapentine groups, 10 in lamotrigine group and 12 in vitamin E group).the mean score of pain at the beginning of study in three groups were similar.Sensory neuropathy was seen im 57% of upper extrimities and 87% of lower extrimities.Deep sensory neuropathy dysfunction was presented in 40% and autonomic dysfunction was seen in 30%.Data showed that gabapentine was more effective to lower the pain score(mean 5 score) than lamotrigine (mean 3.2 score)after one month of treatment.gabapentine is an effective drug for dysesthetic pains among diabetic polyneu-ropathy patients.
