Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in patients with Hand Eczema

Hand eczema represents a variety of disease that involves inflammatory re¬sponses of the hand to endogenous or exogenous factors. The exogenous fac¬tors, especially contact irritants are one of the main etiologies of this disease. One of the most common contact irritants are detergents. The relation between obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)and eczema had been studied in the presented research.This study was done on 100 cases (50 cases in case group and 50 cases in con¬trol group), from Oct. 2003 to June 2004 in 22th bahman Hospital, Mashad- IRAN. The obtained data was analyzed by chi square and t-test and with SPSS version 11.5 software.8 patients in the cases group had OCD (16%) Versus one cases in control group (2%) and this difference was statistically significant (p=0.001, x2=5.98).All of the patients with OCD (washing type) were housekeepers.It seems that in evaluation of patients with hand eczema, the possibility of OCD existence should be evaluated as well, especially in house keepers. Fur¬thermore, dermatologists can prevent the retard diagnosis of OCD, by referring the patients with hand eczema who are suspected to have OCD to psychiatrist.
