Comparing the effect of metronidazole and furazolidone for treatment of giardiasis in children.

Giardiasis is one of the most common intestinal parasitic infection and the most common cause of malabsorption of children in developing countries. Steator¬rhea, abdominal pain, bloat, diarrhea and even growth retardation are the main clinical signs, so treatment is very important.The main purpose of this study is comparing the efficacy and side effects of metronidazole and furazolidone in children with giardiasis.This is a clinical trial study over 2 years period (September 2004-September 2006) on 100 patients who referred to the clinics or bahman 22nd Hospital. Giardiasis trophozoite was proved in all patients with 3 times stool exam. The patients was divided in two 50 members groups and were treated with metro¬nidazole and furazolidone syrup. After the end of treatment, Stool examina¬tion was performed on 3 consecutive days for each child. After completing the questionnaire for each patient, data were analyzed, using SPSS soft ware.Data shows no significant differences in efficacy between two drugs. Urticaria and vomiting were found in 8 patients (16%) who received furazolidone, sever vomiting is seen in only one patient under the treatment with metronidazone. Comparing two treatments, the incidence of side effects was significantly high¬er (p=0.031) with furazolidone.Metronidazole is suggested for treatment of children with giardiasis because of lower incidence of side effects and equal efficacy comparing with furazoli¬done.
