Comparison the effects of herb foeniculum vulgare (fennel) with Mefenamic Acid in treatment of primary dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common pelvic pains in women and Near %50 of women experienced it. About %1 of women in fertility ages default in work between 1-3 days every month due to acute dysmenorrheal symptoms and they use high amount of drugs such as non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive(Oc).The aim of this study is to compare efficacy of herb foeniculum vulgare (fennel) with Mefenamic Acid as a control group for primary dysmenorrhea.This study is a clinical trial that is conducted in Azad Islamic University Hospitals during one year.We choose 58 single girls between 18-28 years old with primary dysmenorrhea and divided them into two equal cases groups. We used mefenamic acid in one group and herb foeniculum vulgare in another.Treatment continued during whole of menestruation and results analaysed after 6 cycles.we used visual analouge scale to evaluate pain. Our material for gathering infor¬mation was questionnaire.The results show no significant difference in the middle pick of pain after treatment by drugs in the both groups (p=0.849).But comparing the middle pick of the pain, show a significant difference in both groups before and after the treatment Statistical difference was (p=0.0001) in fennel group and (p=0.0001) in Mefenamic acid group .Duration of the pain after the treatment had not a significant difference in both fennel and Mef¬enamic acid groups. Weakness in routine works after the treatment was not significant in both groups (P=0.907).Weakness for going to work and school was no significant after treatment in both groups (P=0.907).The results show that dysmenorrhea symptoms after using drugs in fennel and Mefenamic Acid groups had not a significant difference.Our data show efficacy of %2 fennel essence in dysmenorrhea pains, Because this herb has less side effects in comparison with effective chemical drugs which use in primary dysmenorrhea such as NSAIDs and Oc,We advise use of this herb for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea in clinical cares.
