The Effects of Diazepam on the Level of Blood Glucose in the Patients Undergoing Operations

Stress disorder is one of the most common psychological disorders from which most patients suffer when they undergo surgery. Since this uncomfortable condition may be the basis of some future illnesses like diabetics, the pre¬medication of sedative drugs before the operation seems necessary in order to minimize or eliminate the stress of the patients during the operation. This study was conducted in order to observe the effects of diazepam on the blood glucose level of patients undergoing operation. This study used a randomized single blind clinical trial method, 40 patients undergoing surgery were randomly selected and divided into two groups of A & B .The patients then received either placebo (group B; n = 20) or 10 mg diazepam (group A; n = 20). Their blood glucose was measured in three stages: At the time of hospitalization (FBS1), before the injection (FBS2) and 20 minutes after the injection (FBS3) the results were then evaluated through repetitive measurements. In group A, the patientsʹ blood glucose level before the injection, FBS2, was compared with that of the FBS1, at the time of their hospitalization. The results showed 4.45 % increase for their level of blood sugar. However, the results for FBS3, i.e. 20 minutes after the injection, demonstrated 3.15 % reduction. In group B, FBS2 and FBS3, as compared to FBS1, had an increase of 16.7 % and 1.7 %, respectively. By comparing the results of FBS1 and FBS2 in groups A and B, we found no significant difference (p> 0.05).But comparing the FBS3 between the two groups, there was a significant difference (p= 0.00001). The findings of the study show that a single dose of diazepam through an intravenous injection before the operation could sustain the homeostasis condition by decreasing the patientsʹ level of blood glucose caused by the stress of operation.
