Causes of Convulsion in Burned Children

Burn is one of the important accidents in pediatric medical emergency that is commonly concomitant of metabolic, infectious and neurological complications. Seizure is one of the most important complications in burned patients. This study was done to determine the causes of seizure in burned children at Imam Reza hospital.As a descriptive study, the survey was carried out on 2212 patients, under the age of 15, who were hospitalized in the burn ward of Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences during the years of 1996 to 2003.Out of a total of 2212 patients, there were 365 children who had seizure, 86ʹ/. of which happened during the first 48 hours of admission. It was mostly common among those of under 3 years old. Hyponatremia was the most frequent cause of seizure, respectively followed by other causes like having a history of previous seizure, febrile seizure meningitis and head injury with no known cause, hypoglycemia and hypocalcemia.It seems that seizure has a significantly high rate of frequency in burned children and it is preventable with respect to predisposing factor. We consider hyponatremia as the most important and frequent cause of seizure which should be kept in mind and carefully prevented.
