University Students and their Parentsʹ Vision toward the Necessity of Having Relationship with the Opposite Sex

The present study aims at examining university students and their parentsʹ vision toward the necessity of having relationship with the opposite gender. The research is conducted through qualitative method and through using deep interview with 30 students- 18 girls and 12 boys- studying at Shahid Beheshti University. The data was simultaneously recorded, and afterwards the handwritings were matched with the recorded data, and were categorized based on the research questions. The results of the findings indicated that studentsʹ vision in this regard is divided into two parts. A group of them was of the opinion that it was necessary to have relationship with each other and agreed with any type of relationship (spiritual, cognitive, sexual). The other group didnt consider the relationship as essential; however they agreed with the relationship under certain conditions. The former group of respondents was divided into two groups. A group, which preferred cognitive relationship; and the other group, which stressed having spiritual relationship. The results of the data indicated that most students believed that it was not necessary to have relationship with the opposite sex; however they were for having limited relationship with the opposite sex. Based on the remarks of this group of students, majority of their families were against the relationship. Those students who considered any type of relationship pretty necessary said that their parents were either for the relationship or said that their parents let them free in this regard and didnʹt monitor them.
