Analytical and Experimental Assessment of the Coefficient of Consolidation Variations in Soft Soils

The assumption of constant value for coefficients of consolidation during consolidation process is one of the major limitations in Terzaghiʹs equation. Besides, coefficient of consolidation is determined based on the results of one-dimensional consolidation tests using graphical procedures with empirical nature. In the present research, theoretical and experimental studies have been undertaken in order to overcome the mentioned limitations and improve Terzaghiʹs method. Based on a theoretical analysis made, a one-dimensional non-linear partial differential equation has been developed as governing equation for consolidation, considering variable value for coefficient of consolidation. A finite difference numerical approach was used for solution of the non-linear equation. In order to verify reliability of the proposed non-linear equation, experimental studies were conducted on 6 types of soils having different plasticity using hydraulic consolidation apparatus. The results of the developed theory have been compared with those obtained using Terzaghiʹs theory and experimental results. It has been shown that the results of the proposed theory are closer to the experimental results than those obtained using Terzaghiʹs linear theory.
