Biomimetic Synthesis Of Nanostructured Magnesium Hydroxyapatite Research

Natural hydroxyapatite is nanostructured. Also, there exists a minute amount of magnesium ion in the composition of natural hydroxyapatite. The presence of this ion changes the stoichiometric hydroxyapatite to more biodegradable nonstoichiometric hydroxyapatite. Stoichiometric hydroxyapatite and nonstoichiometric magnesium hydroxyapatite were synthesized by precipitation method using magnesium chloride as magnesium source, calcium nitrate as calcium source and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as phosphate source. SEM, XRD and FTIR analyses were used for structural and compositional characterization. Results show that magnesium was incorporated in the composition of synthesized magnesium hydroxyapatite powder.
