Comparing the Masonry Confined Walls of Iranian Standard 2800 with Infills

This research is to investigate the confined walls, proposed in Iranian Standard 2800. The criteria of Iranian Standard 2800 for such walls are mostly qualitative; however, the masonry buildings, composed of confined walls, sometimes should be assessed or rehabilitated for certain performance level or shear force. The presence of ties in such walls may lead to the assumption of being considered as infilled panels, and accordingly their strengths are calculated by relevant formulas. Here, this assumption is investigated, regarding many options for walls and ties with different strengths and dimensions. For each, the wall forces to the ties are compared with the tie capacities, assuming that the walls behave as infills. Finally, it is shown that the confined walls of Iranian Standard 2800 can not be considered as infills. Therefore, the formulas, mentioned in this paper are applied to calculate their strengths.
