The Reformist Left: A Review of Richard Rortyʹs Political Thought

Richard Rorty describes his bourgeois liberal society as a bazaar surrounded by exclusive private clubs whose members do not see any way of espousing the convictions of many of those with whom they do business. Nevertheless, he does not consider such a society as the end of history, and expresses his wish for experiencing new practices and institutions as well as new creativities. He is an egalitarian and leftist liberal, believing in gradual reforms in order to achieve economic justice. Rorty criticizes the new generation of leftist intellectuals, whom sometimes he calls Foucauldians, for ignoring the real issues such as the class gap, and existing inequalities and sufferings. He regards their philosophical views as acceptable, but their political ones as foolish. Patriotism is another aspect of Rortyʹs political thought, which is independent of the other aspects. It seems that, for him, his love of his country is not contingent on achieving, or even on getting close to, his liberal egalitarian Utopia.
