Discourse as Theory and Method

Application of discourse theory in various branches of social sciences has been expanded in recent times. This theory inspired by Saussure linguistics,emphasizing the important role of language in representation and reproduction of social world. In the political sciences Laclau and Mouffe have applied this theory for analyzing the complexities of contemporary society in a reconstructed Marxist tradition. They believe that discourse is a collection of meaningful interconnected signifiers that finding its content in discursive articulation and against opposite discourses. The discourses as shape peopleʹs understandings of reality, truth, identity and social behavior are political constructs based on power relations. In this essay after introduction of discourse theory of Laclau and Mouffe, its application in political science will be studied.
