Provided Cares for Parents with Hospitalized Premature Infants and its Importance: Nursesʹ Viewpoint

Background & Objectives: Birth of a premature infant makes clear the need for family centered care and providing appropriate care via increasing relationship between health care staff and family of premature infant. Most of the available studies are describing medical problems or nursing care of these newborn babies but pay less attention to family centered care; therefore it seemed necessary to perform a research focuses on this object. Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive-correlation study performed on 32 nurses working in Neonatal Intensive Care units of Alzahra, Koodakan and Taleghani hospitals. The sampling method was census and data collected by a 21-items questionnaire named the "Nurse Parent Support Tool" (NPST) developed by Margaret Miles and et al; 1999. This scale is about providing nursing care for the parents measuring four dimensions of support: "emotional, communicational-informational, self esteem, quality of care Two measures of this scale, A: importance of supports and B: received supports, can be used in this research. Scale validity was determined by content and translation validity. The reliability was determined by Cronbach Alpha, too. Results: The greatest and most important support for the parents ofpremature infants hospitalized in NICU have been provided in "quality of care" and "emotional" dimensions. Besides Spearman- Rho test showed a positive significant correlation between providing nursing support and its importance from view point of nurses. Conclusion: The results showed that "informational-communicational" and "esteem " dimensions of support were low in NICU units; therefore it seems to be necessary to pay attention to these kinds of supports and establishing of them in family centered care.
