The Relationship between Iron Deficiency and Intensity of Depression among Teen Girls of Khoy

Background & Objectives: today iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder in the world .Some of the signs and symptoms of iron deficiency are similar to some of the symptoms of depression. Nevertheless few studies done on this field in Iran; this study aims to survey the relationship between iron deficiency and severe depression among teen girls of Khoy in 2008-2009. Materials & Methods: This was a correlative descriptive study. The investigation group included 216 who were generated randomly via multi-stage sampling. Data collection tool was a questionnaire and blood sample test; data were analyzed by statistical methods and SPSS software. Results: Outcomes showed that %16/7 of students had low and %4/6 had median depression scores and also %17/6 of investigation group was suffering iron deficiency. The statistical t-test showed significant relationship between iron deficiency and depression. Conclusion: The present study as well as the previous ones indicates that iron deficiency is one of the risk factors for development of depressive illness among girls. Since womenʹs health influence family and society health iron deficiency will have negative impact on future health of girls as well as their pregnancy and breastfeeding periods. Therefore parents and girls must be fully trained in order to take preventive measures.
