Comparison of the Effect of Erythropoietin and Erythropoietin with Carnitine on Correction of Anemia in Hemodialysis Patients

Background and Objectives: Anemia is a major complication in chronic renal failure (CRF) patient undergoing dialysis. The availability of recombinant human EPO (rhEPO) has been one of the most significant advances in the care of anemia of CRF. L-carnitine deficiency is also a common problem in hemodialysis patients. Here we compared the effect of erythropoietin with and without L- carintine supplementation on correction of anemia in hemodialysis patients. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study 50 patients with CRF who where under hemodialysis were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group one treated with rhEPO 6000IU weekly (rhEPO group). Group 2 treated with L-carnitine 500mg daily (carnation group) and group 3 received a combination of rhEPO 6000IU weekly and carntine 500mg daily (rhEPO + carntine group). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS, version 11. Results: In rhEPO group there was significant elevation of hemoglobin (P=0.03) at the end of study. In carintine treated group there was significant elevation of hemoglobin level (P=0.014). The most significant elevation of hemoglobin level (P=0.002) was observed in rhEPO + carintine group. Conclusion: It seems that the administration of rhEPO with carnitine may improved the management of anemia of hemodialysis patients.
