Technological Structure of Iranʹs Export

Current paper considers Iranian technological structure of export during time period 1998-2004, as well as making a theoretical survey of technology role in international trade theories and technologically classifying of product groups. Results indicate that considerable share of export is devoted to primary and low technology product groups and the portion of medium and high technology product groups in Iranʹs export is low. Thus, it seems that there is a significant technological lag in Iranʹs export structure. This is not favorable in highly competitiveness international trade environment, especially considering the technology has currently dominant role in the export of advanced industrialized countries. With respect to considerable existing capacities of Iranian economy, it seems that technological upgrade of the export is accessible. Furthermore, industrial upgrade, enhancing contribution to the world production network, facilitating foreign direct investment flow and proper utilization of regional economic integration have important role in the technological upgrade of production and export.
