In this research, the feasibility of the addition of mechanical activated nanocrystalline A1203 particles to aluminum matrix melt was investigated. For this purpose, A1203 was milled in a high energy ball mill for 20 hours. Subsequently, 1.00 wt.% A1203 was added to molten Al. Peak broadening of the diffraction patterns showed that A1203 crystallites were in the scale of nanometers. The size and shape of the A1203 grains was determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the addition of a small amount of A1203 to the matrix significantly increased the hardness, wear resistance and compression strength.
