The application and implementation of Soft System Methodology (SSM) for timetabling in the faculty of management of Tehran University

The problem of building a university timetable involves a large number of stakeholders including students, teachers, institutional administrators etc .While Hard OR methods have been utilized to solve the timetabling problem, alternative research methodologies may be required to facilitate meaningful collaboration between these parties. Checklandʹs Soft System Methodology (SSM) was designed as a theoretical model both to derive deeper insights in to the survey data and to deliver an ideal university timetable for faculty of management of Tehran University, which will ultimately convince all concerned people. In order to obtain qualitative data, a survey design and research methods including open questionnaires and interviews were applied. Finally, the results were analyzed and reviewed towards gaining an effective and appropriate timetabling technique for the university. The use of SSM for this study allowed the analysis of a broad and complex situation which enabled key changes to the university timetabling in the faculty of management of Tehran University.
