The Relationship between Optimism and Pessimism with Mental Health in Adults In Isfahan

This study has been conducted with the aim of examining the relationship between optimism and pessimism and the dimensions of the mental health (somatization, anxiety, social dysfunction and depression) and comparing the relation of the optimism and pessimism with mental health in adult men and women in Isfahan. To accomplish the aims of the study, a sample of 100 were selected from the statistical population by randomized cluster sampling to whom the optimism and pessimism Questionnaire and the Gerneral Health Questionnaire (GHQ28) were administered. The results coefficient of pearson correlation showed that there is a significant, negative relation between the optimism with mental health and the dimensions of the mental health (somatization, anxiety, social dysfunction and depression) (P < 0.01). Also there is a significant, positive relation between the pessimism with mental health and the dimensions of the mental health (somatization, anxiety, social dysfunction) (P < 0.01) and pessimism with depression (P < 0.05). However, the results Z-Fisher showed that there is no significant difference between the relations of the optimism and pessimism with mental health in men and women.
