The purpose of this article is to analyze some social factors that affect on studentsʹ national identity formation. Using a questionnaire, 427 high school students (237 girls and 190 boys) aged 14 to 17 were studied in Esfahan. In this study, related theory was utilized to explain national identity. According to theoretical framework, social identity consists of three aspects: cognitive, emotional and behavioral.
The results indicate that the affective aspect of national identity is the strongest aspect and the behavioral is the weakest aspect of national identity. The findings also show that variables such as the national- oriented ness of the family and of friends and television programs have the highest effects on studentsʹ national identity and those variables like family socio-economic status, the education system, and the contents of textbooks had no significant effects on national identity.
