Evaluation of Maize and Soybean Strip Intercropping with and without Azospirillum Inoculation

The evaluate different strip intercropping planting patterns of maize and soybean, with and without azospirillum inoculation of seed, a factorial field experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications at the Agricultural Experiment Station of Islamic Azad University, Tabriz branch during growing season of 2005. Strip intercropping planting patterns included 2 maize+2 soybean rows, 2 maize+6 soybean rows, 4 maize+2 soybean rows, 4 maize+4 soybean rows, 6 maize+6 soybean rows and monocultures of maize and soybean as the first factor, and with and without azospirillum inoculation of seeds as the second factor. Results indicated that inoculation of maize seed with azospirillum increased its seed yield, from 773.4 g.m-2 to 992.3 g.m2. However, the effect of azospirillum inoculation on soybean seed yield in strip intercropping of maize and soybean was negative. On the other hand, increasing strip with of soybean in mixed stripcropping pattern of maize and soybean increased soybean seed yield. The maximum seed yields of soybean (391 g.m-2) and maize (950 g.m-2) were obtained in plantingpattems of 6:6 and 2:2 respectively. The maximum evaluation indices for simple leaf equivalent ratios (LER) for strip inter cropping planting pattern of 2:2 with azospirillum inoculation was 1.22, for standard inter cropping about 1.2 and for 6:2 strip inter cropping pattern with azospirillum inoculation about 1.2. Based on the results and cropping practices strip inter cropping of 6:6 planting pattern can be recommended.
