The Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an autonomous international organization. It was founded by a group of distinguished scientists in Trieste, Italy, during the year 1983. It was officially launched by the secretary general of the United Nations in 1985. The members of TWAS currently consists of 627 scientists. 62 countries of which are located in the south, and 14 countries of which are from the North.
The mission of TWAS is to promote scientific capacities in the south for science development. This is achieved by recognizing and supporting excellence in scientific research in the south; providing scientists in the south with research facilities for the advancement of their work; facilitating contacts between individuals and centres of scholarship; encouraging scientific research on major problems facing developing countries.
During the period of 1986-2000, TWAS has provided nearly 300 awards and prizes, over 1400 research grants and more than 1000 fellowships as well as associateships to scientists in over 100 developing countries.
