Public Libraries and Analysis of Their Social Functions as a Communication-Media Foundation

هدف: هدف بررسي حاضر، تحليل نظريه‌هاي مطرح در حوز? كاركردهاي اجتماعي رسانه‌هاي ارتباطي از جمله كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي است و سپس، تبيين و تعميم نظريه‎اي است كه از تناسب بهتري با كتابخانه‎هاي عمومي برخوردار است. در اين تحليل، كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي با توجه به جايگاه و كاركردهايشان، به‎مثابه رسانه‎هاي ارتباطي تبيين شده‎اند. روش: پژوهش حاضر با كمك روش فراتحليل در پي كندوكاوِ نظريه‌هاي مطرح در حوز? رسانه‌هاي ارتباطي براي رسيدن به يك نظري? مطلوب وكاربست آن براي نهادهاي رسانه‌اي مانند كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي است. به‎علاوه، در اين تحليل براي ارائ? شواهد لازم، از روش سندي نيز استفاده شده است. يافته‌ها: يافته‌هاي اين تحليل نشان داد كه هيچ‎يك از نظريه‌هاي جامع? توده‌وار، نظري? كاركردي رسانه‌ها، نظري? جبر فن‌آوري، نظريه ماركسيستي و زيرمجموعه‌هاي آن، و نظري? اجتماعي-فرهنگي به لحاظ شرايط بومي كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي در ايران و وجود نظريه‌هاي جديد جريان اطلاعات بين‌الملل، قابل انطباق با كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي جمهوري اسلامي ايران نيستند و صرفاً نظريه همگرا مي‌تواند به‎مثابه يك الگوي «وحدت‌گرا- رهايي‌بخش» در جريان اطلاعات جهاني، براي كاركرد اجتماعي كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي به‎منزل? نهادي ارتباطي رسانه‌اي مطرح باشد. به‌علاوه، عناصر اين نظريه نيز با مقتضاي كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي به تفصيل بيان شده است. اصالت/ارزش: از آنجا كه اَبعاد نظري مباحث حوز? كتابخانه‌ها و از جمله كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي در سطوح ملي و بين‌المللي تا حدود زيادي مغفول مانده است، مقال? حاضر با نگاه جديدي كه به كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي دارد، قصد دارد با تحليل نظريات رسانه‌هاي ارتباطي، الگوي مناسبي براي كاركرد اجتماعي كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي بيابد. كليدواژه‌ها: كتابخانه‌هاي عمومي، رسانه‌هاي گروهي، كاركردهاي اجتماعي، نظريه همگرا، اشاع? اطلاعات، فراتحليل

Purpose: The purpose of present research is to analyze theories proposed for social functions of communication media including public libraries. Also, it aims to explain and generalize a theory best coordinated with public libraries. In current analysis, public libraries have been explained regarding their position and functions as communication media. Methodology: Using meta-analysis method, it is intended to explore theories proposed in scope of communication media so as to reach a desired theory and employ it to media institutions such as public libraries. Furthermore, citation method was used in the analysis to provide essential evidence. Findings: According to the obtained findings and due to local/native conditions of public libraries in Iran as well as the existence of modern theories of international information flow, none of the theories including mass society theory, functional theory of media, theory of technological determinism, Marxism and its subsets, and socio-cultural theory can be adapted to public libraries in Iran; only the convergence theory as a unifying-liberating pattern in international information flow can be proposed as a communication-media institution for social function of public libraries. In addition, elements of this theory have been explained in detail in context of public libraries. Originality/Value: As theoretical dimensions of issues in field of libraries especially public libraries have been neglected to a high extent in national and international level, the current paper with its new approach towards public libraries aims to find an appropriate pattern for social function of public libraries through analysis of theories of communication media.
