Modeling in Science: a Case Study in Physics

مفهوم مدل يكي از مفاهيم اساسيِ فلسفه‌ي علم و معرفت‌شناسيِ معاصر است. فيزيك‌دانان يك مساله‌ي واقعي را حل نمي‌كنند، بلكه به جاي آن مساله، مدلي را به وجود مي‌آورند تا به كمك آن مساله را حل كنند. واژه‌ي مدل‌سازي در فيزيك بسيار فراگير شده است و آموزش مدل‌سازي نمونه‌اي از كلِ يك برنامه‌ي آموزشي بر پايه‌ي مدل‌سازي است. با وجود اين، فراگيران در كلاس‌هاي سنتيِ درسِ فيزيك از مفهوم «مدل» دركِ روشني ندارند و در نتيجه متوجه نقش اين مفهوم در فيزيك نمي‌شوند. اصول بنياديِ مكانيكِ نيوتوني را مي‌توان دستگاهي از قاعده‌ها در نظر گرفت كه دسته‌اي از بازي‌هاي مدل‌سازي را تعريف مي‌كنند. هدف مشترك اين بازي‌ها توسعه‌ي مدل‌هايي از پديده‌هاي فيزيكي است. اين نقطه‌ي شروع، رهيافتي جديد به آموزش فيزيك است كه در آن به فراگيران از ابتدا ياد داده مي‌شود كه در علوم «نام بازي مدل‌سازي است». ايده‌ي اصلي آموزش، دستگاهي از اصول صريح مدل‌سازي و روش‌هاست تا شاگردان با مجموعه‌اي بنيادي از مدل‌هاي فيزيكي آشنا شوند. آنها با تمرين فراوان در جهت مدل‌سازي و اعتبار بخشي به مدل مي‌توانند پديده‌هاي فيزيكي را توجيه، پيش‌بيني و توصيف كنند. اين مقاله مبناي منطقي، فيزيكي، معرفت‌شناسي، تاريخي و آموزشي اين رهيافت را تعيين مي‌كند.

Model concept is one of the fundamental concepts in philosophy of science and epistemology. The physicists do not solve a real problem, but instead they create a model to solve the problem with it. The word modeling is so comprehensive and to teach modeling is an example of a whole educational plan. Nevertheless, the students in traditional classes of physics course do not have a clear understanding of the word modeling, consequently, do not notice the role of this concept in physics. The fundamental principles of Newtonian mechanics can be considered as a system of regulations which defines the mixture of modeling games. The common goal of these games is to develop models of physical phenomena. This is a preliminary point for a new approach to physic education in which the students are taught from the beginning that the name of game is modeling in science. The main idea of systematic education is of explicit principles of modeling and the methods to make student familiar with a fundamental set of physical models, and exercise of modeling, authentication of model with experiment, and preparing model for justification of prediction and description of physical phenomena. This paper defines the physical, epistemological, historical and educational basis rationale of this approach.
