A Method for Modeling of Electromagnetic Pulses Due to Release of Partial Discharge in Transformers

The first step in using UHF waves in partial discharge detection is simulation of radiation of UHF waves due partial discharge and how signals are received in different areas. In this paper while reviews the studies in this field, new simulation has been done by CST software. In this simulation the whole of structure of active part of transformer has been considered and contrary to other studies -that simulated partial discharge in oil only-, partial discharge is considered in high voltage coil insulation. By simulating such structure, we studied the effect of different parameters on the received signal from the occurrence of partial discharge. The result shows that the active part of transformer has much influence on the rate of received signal that if ignored incorrect result obtain. We also observed that received signal will be different for various defects and this feature can be proper in engineering diagnosis.
