Brain stem encephalitis induced by influenza A (H1N1) in a 10- year boy

Background: Brain stem encephalitis is an uncommon infectious disease. Rarely, it develops by influenza A (H1N1) and it is the first case that is reported in Iran. Case report: A 10- year boy presented to emergency room (ER) with progressive muscular weakness, loss of consciousness and fever. He underwent mechanical ventilation due to need to respiratory assist. Computed tomography (CT) scan and electroencephalographic (EEG) results was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reported brain stem encephalitis. Serologic test and PCR documented diagnosis of influenza A (H1N1). After 27 days admission, he discharged without any neurologic problem. Conclusion: According to increasingly prevalence of influenza A (H1N1), looking for associated diseases and complications are recommended.
