Comparative Study of Mercaptans Separation from Natural Gas Using Adsorption by Molecular Sieves and Caustic Absorption

In this article, a comparison of two processes used in removal of mercaptans from natural gas, i.e. adsorption by molecular sieves and absorption by caustic solvent is presented. The comparison is done by simulation of processes and conducting it under similar feed conditions. .In simulation of merox process, Hysys software and contact column modeling have been used. The simulation of molecular sieve process has been done by adsorption process modeling. The results gained from simulation with operational data indicate a good agreement for both processes. The comparison shows that molecular sieve process is better than Merox process but this process has high energy consumption. Nonetheless Merox process has less limitation from technical point of view and is a conventional method in mercaptans removal.
