An unusual suicidal attempt by a prisoner by swallowing razor blades and safety pins: a case report & review article

Introduction: Committing suicide is common among prisoners. Numerous cases of unusual suicidal attempts have been reported as case reports so far, each constituting a special style of making such attempts. However, no report has been seen in references on a suicidal attempt by swallowing razor blades and safety pins. Case Presentation: The present study investigates a 25-year-old single male, sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of robbing and mugging of the victim, who passed two years of his prison term and suffered from major depression last year. This prisoner attempted to commit suicide by swallowing 7 half razor blades and 2 safety pins in an effort to put an end to his life. A few hours later, the prisoner was transferred to a hospital where treatment was initiated. Conclusion: Higher prevalence of suicide than the general population, it is therefore suggested that all prisoners undergo mental assessment on entering prisons and that special attention be given to the mental health and hygiene of prisoners so that no similar cases would occur again.
